Big surge in JSE Main market – Wednesday

The Main Market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange ended January with strong gains in the market indices, with JSE All Jamaican Composite Index jumping 2,844.76 points to 315,947.37 and the JSE Index climbing 2,591.90 points to 287,863.79, marginally down for the year to date.
Main and US market activities ended with 9 stocks rising, 10 declining and 10 trading firm as 29 securities traded, versus 31 on Wednesday, including 2 from the US market.
Main market activity surged to 17,559,021 shares valued at $97,721,084 with just two stocks accounting for 88 percent of the volume. In contrast with 4,096,473 shares valued at $78,829,626 traded on Wednesday.
The US market traded 9,262 units with a value of US$29,441 with the JSE US Equities Index declining 2.23 points to end at 172.09 for a 3.6 percent rise from the 2017 close. Trading in this market ended with Productivity Business closing at 55 US cents with 25,294 shares and Proven Investments trading 68,968 ordinary shares, to close with a loss of 0.5 cents at 22.5 US cents.
Market activity ended with an average of 650,334 shares valued at $3,619,299, in contrast to 146,303 shares valued at $2,815,344 on Tuesday. The average volume and value for the month to date amounts to 239,900 units valued at $5,158,193 and previously 220,146 units valued at $5,239,823. December closed with average of 686,156 units valued at an average of $8,654,832 for each security traded.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading in the main and the US dollar markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reading shows 10 stocks ended with bids higher than their last selling prices and 2 with a lower offer.
Major price changes at the close of the market are, Caribbean Cement gained $1.50 and JMMB Group climbed $1. The volume traded was dominated by Cable & Wireless with an exchange of 11,351,768 shares and Wisynco Group trading 4,146,449 units.

In the main market preference segment, Jamaica Money Market 7.5% traded at $2, with 160,230 stock units, JMMB Group 7.5% closed at $1.17, with 9,651 shares, 138 Student Living ended at $6.15, with 1,000 shares, Proven Investments climbed 85 cents to a 52 weeks’ high of $5.90, with 100 units traded.

Jamaican$ falls against US$ – Wednesday

The Jamaican dollar rose 32 cents from Tuesday’s closing selling rate to remain above J$125, to the United States currency in foreign exchange trading on Wednesday, but the buying rate inched higher by 23 cents.
Inflows of all currencies, totaled US$43.18 million, versus US$39.18 million on Tuesday with the selling of US$39.60 million down from US$49.93 million on Tuesday.
In US dollar trading, dealers sold US$37.66 million at an average of $125.39 at the close, compared to US$43.04 million at an average of $125.07 on Tuesday. US currency purchases by dealers, amounted to US$38.01 million at an average of $124.04 at the close, compared to US$34.17 million at an average of $123.81.
At mid-day on Wednesday dealers purchased US$11.9 million at an average rate of J$124.49 and sold US$13.89 million at an average of J$124.52.
On Tuesday at midday dealers purchased US$21.3 million at an average rate of J$124.35 and sold US$15.08 million at an average of J$125.07.
The selling rate on Wednesday, for the Canadian dollar dropped to J$100.73 from J$104.69 at the close on Tuesday, the selling rate for the British Pound rose to J$176.58 from J$174.55 previously and the euro fell in value against the Jamaican dollar at J$155.33 to buy the European common currency, versus the prior selling rate of J$156.03.

Market activity on the Trinidad & Tobago Stock Exchange ended on Wednesday with trading in 16 securities against 14 on Tuesday, with 4 stocks advancing, 4 declining and 8 remaining unchanged.
At close, the Composite Index lost 0.50 points to 1,272.53, the All T&T Index fell 0.99 points to 1,703.77, while Cross Listed Index closed unchanged at 113.53.
Market activity ended with 334,468 shares with a value of $9,456,041 traded, compared to 194,026 shares with a value of $3,847,017 on Tuesday.

Losses| Clico Investments fell by 40 cents and close at $20.50, with 7,654 units, Massy Holdings shares fell 1 cent and finished at $47.49, with 102 stock units changing hands, Prestige Holdings fell 20 cents and finished at $10.30, trading 450 shares and Trinidad & Tobago NGL fell $1.01 and close at $26.54, with 96,007 units.
Firm Traded| Ansa Merchant Bank closed at $40, trading 2,434 shares trading, First Citizens finished at $32.01, trading 150 shares trading, National Enterprises close at $9.67, with 6,168 units, NCB Financial Group finished at $6.60, trading 30,700 shares trading, Republic Financial Holdings ended at $101.50, with 41,534 stock units changing hands. Sagicor Financial finished at $7.90, with 5,145 units, Trinidad Cement ended at $3.75, trading 46,495 shares trading and West Indian Tobacco concluded trading at $88.51, with 3,131 stock units changing hands.

Junior Market climbs 7% in January

After climbing 36.88 points on Monday, 45.59 points on Tuesday the Junior Market jumped 76.21 points to close at 2,922.21 to be up 7 percent for the year to date. Much of the gains have to do with some recovery in the prices of two largest Lasco companies.
At the close of market activities on Wednesday, 25 securities changed hands, resulting in an exchange of 4,216,943 units valued at $15,584,380 compared to 8,181,768 units valued at $31,174,089 from 22 securities changing hands, on Tuesday. GWest Corporation accounted for 71 percent of the volume traded for the day. Market activities ended with the prices of 11 securities that advanced, 12 declined and 2 remained unchanged.
Trading ended with an average of 168,678 units for an average of $623,375 in contrast to 371,899 units for an average of $1,417,004 on Tuesday. For the month to date an average of 122,386 shares valued at $489,704 and previously, an average of 119,907 shares valued at $482,228. December closed with an average of 568,732 units valued at $3,447,957 for each security traded.

Unemployment in Jamaica drops to 10.4%

Unemployment in Jamaica took another fall in the latest survey, done by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) as 27,300 more persons gained employment over the 12 months period to October last year.
The latest data from Statin shows, the unemployment rate falling to 10.4 percent in October last year, “the lowest since October 2008,” Statin stated. According to Statin the rate of unemployment “has been trending downwards over the last decade”. The unemployment numbers are based on a Labour Force, of 1,347,600 representing a decrease of 6,500 compared to 1,354,100 in October 2016.
A total of 1,206,800 persons were employed in October 2017, representing 27,300 persons or 2.3 percent more than the 1,179,500 recorded in October 2016. Employment for males increased by 5,300 to 668,900 and for females an increase of 22,000 or 4.3 percent from 515,900 to 537,900 over the same period. The youth unemployment fell but remains high at 25.4 percent, the lowest since January 2008.
The overall unemployment rate for the country in July last year was 11.3 percent.

Main market activity increased with 4,096,473 shares valued at $78,829,626 traded, in contrast with 3,323,821 shares valued at $32,670,539 on Monday.
The US market traded 35,129 units with a value of US$7,605 with the JSE US Equities Index declining 1.18 points to end at 174.32. Trading in this market ended with Margaritaville closing at 22 US cents with 4,100 units after shedding 3 cents, Proven Investments trading 27,087 ordinary shares, to close with a gain of 2 cents at 23 US cents and Sterling Investments closing with a loss of 2 US cents and ended at 12 US cents with 3,942 shares.
Market activity ended with an average of 146,303 shares valued at $$2,815,344, in contrast to 132,953 shares valued at $1,306,822 on Monday. Lasco Distributors traded 76% of total volume in the Junior Market.

After climbing 36.88 points on Monday the Junior Market made further gains on Tuesday at the close 45.59 points higher to 2,846.00, as the prices of 12 securities advanced, 9 declined and 1 remained unchanged.
At the close of market activities on Tuesday, 22 securities changed hands, resulting in an exchange of 8,181,768 units valued at $31,174,089 compared to 4,267,682 units valued at $16,140,258 from 22 securities changing hands, on Monday. Lasco Distributors gained 20 cents, accounting for 76 percent of the market volume and Lasco Manufacturing finished 13 cents higher with 329,396 units making a major contribution to the gain in the market index.
Trading ended with an average of 371,899 units for an average of $1,417,004 in contrast to 193,986 units for an average of $733,648 on Monday. For the month to date an average of 119,907 shares valued at $482,228 and previously, an average of 107,450 shares valued at $423,942. December closed with an average of 568,732 units valued at $3,447,957 for each security traded.
