Financial stocks pull JSE down

NCB stock fell back to $18.80 from the $19.99 it was pushed to on Thursday

Friday’s activity on the Jamaica Stock Exchange saw decline in the prices of Jamaica Money Market Brokers, National Commercial Bank and Scotia Group pulling the main market indices down more than 700 points. On Thursday National Commercial Bank closed at a new 52 weeks high at $19.99, leaving a big gap between buyers and sellers, hence the fall on Friday.
Investors participated in a small number of securities on Friday, resulting in the prices of 6 rising and 6 declining as 17 securities changed hands and ended with 2,404,440 units, valued at $12,847,928 traded, in all market segments. At the close there was demand for more with bids failing to attract sellers at the closing bid prices.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the close of the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator shows 8 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 4 with offers that were lower.
Main Market| The JSE Market Index lost 702.66 points to 76,333.54, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index fell 785.62 points to close at 84,062.74 and the JSE combined index declined by 667.53 points to close at 78,323.69.

JMMB stock closed down to $6.50 on Friday but JSE had the price falling 54 cents in computing the index.

Gains| Stocks gaining with last traded prices, at the end of trading in the main market are, Cable & Wireless closing with 236,428 shares changing hands, 2 cents higher at 48 cents, Grace Kennedy ending with 3,383 units, with the price rising $1.50 to end at $63. Jamaica Stock Exchange ended trading with 795,000 units changing hands and gained 30 cents to $1.90, Margaritaville finished with 46,000 shares changing hands to close with a gain of 0.05 cents to 10.5 US cents and Sagicor Real Estate Fund ended with 10,000 units trading, to close with a 15 cents gain at $7.20.
Firm| The stocks in the main market to close without a change in the last traded prices are, Scotia Group which ended with 147,987 units trading to close at $20.10, Desnoes & Geddes closing with 325,000 shares trading to close at $4.90 and Scotia Investments ended with 15,000 shares changing hands at $23.

Declines| The last traded prices of stocks with losses at the end of trading in the main market are, Jamaica Broilers closing with 102,265 units trading as the price slipped 5 cents to $4, Jamaica Money Market Brokers finished with 514,668 shares trading lower by 1 cent to $6.50, National Commercial Bank closed with 7,200 shares changing hands to close lower by $1.19 at $18.80 and Pan Jamaican Investment finishing with 6,750 units, the price slipped $3.99 to $52.01.
Preference| Jamaica Money Market Brokers 8.75% preference shares traded 27,000 units at $3 and Jamaica Public Service 9.5% preference shares traded 941 units at $1,006.10.

Is TTSE sensing economic problems?

At the close of trading on the Trinidad Stock Exchange on Friday, there were more stocks being offered for sale below their last selling prices than those that had bids higher than the last prices, the gap is relatively wide, reflecting negative market sentiments. This is one of, if not the worst reading this data is showing, since its tracking by IC insider.com. Is this an indication that investors are starting to sense problems down the road for the Trinidad economy, with the price of oil and gas having collapsed?
At the market’s close, there were 16 securities that changed hands, 3 advanced, 2 declined and 11 traded firm, with a total of 123,245 units, valued at $2,890,199 trading. The Composite Index rose 0.49 points to close at 1,151.20, the All T&T Index rose by 0.98 points to close at 1,982.73 and the Cross Listed Index remained at 41.86.
Gains| Stocks increasing in price at the close are, National Flour Mills ended with 2,960 units trading, at $1.20 for 1 cent gain, Scotiabank gained 25 cents to end the day at $62.25 as it traded 1,175 units, Unilever Caribbean traded only 100 shares but gained 6 cents to end at $64.57, a new 52 weeks’ high.
Declines| The stocks declining at the end of trading are, First Citizens Bank traded 2,346 shares to close with the loss of 1 cent at $37.64 and Massy Holdings with a volume of 5,902 shares being traded for $402,491 to close 3 cent lower at $68.18.
Firm Trades| Stocks closing with prices unchanged at the end of trading are, Angostura Holdings with 200 shares closed at $14, ANSA Mcal closed at $66.51 after trading 1,060 units, Clico Investment Fund traded 30,072 shares valued at $706,435 and declined by 1 cent to end at $23.50.
Firstcaribbean International Bank traded 500 units at $5, Guardian Holdings trading 1,270 shares at $13.25. Guardian Media closed at $19.75 with 1,100 shares changing hands, Jamaica Money Market Brokers contributed 4,406 shares in trading at 44 cents. National Commercial Bank ended trading with just 1,000 shares at $1.17, One Caribbean Media with 67,669 shares changing hands for a value of $1,488,721 to close at $22, Point Lisas Industrial Port with 300 shares changing hands closed with at $3.75 while Scotia Investments added 3,185 shares at $1.45.

Little trading in junior stocks

Activity on the Junior Market closed with only 3 securities traded and ended with 166,818 units valued at $202,761. The JSE Junior Market Index slipped 0.70 points to close at 700.75, with the price advancing.
At the close of the junior market indicators continue to point to the likelihood of price gains ahead. At the end of trading on Friday, there were 4 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and none with the offer lower. The junior market continues to reflect renewed interest with only 5 securities closing with no bids to buy compared with as many as 11 a few weeks ago. There were 8 securities that had no stocks being offered for sale which is an indication that supply for a third of the junior market stocks are not readily available to trade and most likely will require the bids to be more in line with historical valuation measures.
The three stocks trading are, Lasco Manufacturing gained 1 cent while trading 153,678 shares at $1.20, Honey Bun traded 240 units at $1.71 followed by Lasco Distributors with 12,900 shares at $1.42 after losing 8 cents.

In Thursday’s activity on the Jamaica Stock Exchange, National Commercial Bank jumped to a new 52 weeks’ high of $19.99 at the close of trading, as interest continues to build in Jamaican stocks. At the close, the prices of 10 stocks rose and 6 declined, the fifth consecutive day that the number of declining stocks, were not leading. Overall 27 securities changed hands, ending in 3,023,823 units trading, valued at $21,907,847, in all market segments.

J$ loses against US & Can$

<strong Trading in the forex market in Jamaica on Wednesday, resulted in the Jamaican dollar fell against the United States and Canadian dollars but gained against the British pound. The purchases of all currencies by dealers, translated to the equivalent of US$31,380,373, in contrast to US$33,687,953 on Tuesday, and selling of the equivalent of US$37,740,338 compared to US$38,181,833 on Tuesday.
In US dollar trading, dealers bought US$27,919,483 compared to US$28,451,468 on Tuesday. The buying rate for the US dollar rose 10 cents to $114.11 and US$35,545,832 was sold versus US$34,814,610 on Tuesday with the selling rate climbing 11 cents to $114.83. The Canadian dollar buying rate fell 43 cents to $94.68 with dealers buying C$1,441,249 and selling C$1,127,664, at an average selling rate that rose 18 cents, to $96.88. The rate for buying the British Pound fell 66 cents to $171.38 for the purchase of £1,158,566, while £514,331 was sold, the rate fell 33 cents to $173.28. At the end of trading it took J$136.74 to purchase the Euro, 10 cents less than on Tuesday, according to data from Bank of Jamaica, while dealers purchased the European common currency at J$133.86 for a 2 cents gain. Other currencies bought, amounted to the equivalent of US$525,051 while the equivalent of US$466,972, was sold.
Highs & Lows| The highest buying rate for the US dollar, rose 15 cents to $115.20, the lowest buying rate gained 27 cents at $93.52. The highest selling rate remained at $119.84 and lowest selling rate dropped $16.14 to $95.36. The highest buying rate for the Canadian dollar fell 25 cents to $97.45, the lowest buying rate fell 70 cents to $77.07. The highest selling rate rose 24 cents to $100.50 and the lowest selling rate remained unchanged at $92.85. The highest buying rate for the British Pound, gained $1.66 to $178.50. The lowest buying rate fell $1.91 to $139.61, the highest selling rate lost 33 cents to $179.97 and the lowest selling rate remained at $168.20.
