The Jamaica Stock Exchange on Thursday closed with main market indices recording tripe digit losses, adding to the big losses on Wednesday. The market closed with a fairly high participation rate of 30 securities changing hands but with low activity resulting in just 2,344,156 units trading, valued at only $14,789,149 with 9 stocks rising, 10 declining with 2 stocks closing at 52 weeks high and 1 at a 52 weeks’ low, in all market segments.
At the close, the JSE Market Index fell 657.55 points to 98,441.76, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index dived 734.97 points to close at 108,970.43 and the JSE combined index dropped 731.14 points to end at 101,943.74.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator had a reading that reflects continuation of declining stocks having the upper hand over advancing one with 6 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 9 with offers that were lower.
In trading, Cable and Wireless had 214,092 shares changing hands to end at 40 cents, Caribbean Cement had 112,969 units changing hands at $8.01, Desnoes & Geddes traded 212,380 shares at $7 for a gain of 21 cents, Gleaner closed with 17,000 shares and fell 20 cents to $1.80. Jamaica Broilers traded at $5.85 with 8,550 shares changing hands for a loss of 20 cents, JMMB Group traded 383,750 shares at $7.95, National Commercial Bank traded 26,130 shares to end lower by $1 to $29, Proven Investments ordinary share traded 225,030 units at 19.5 US cents, up 0.50 cents. Sagicor Group with 17,030 shares changing hands, closed 51 cents down at $12.95, Sagicor Real Estate Fund fell 25 cents to close at $8.50 while trading a mere 865 units, Scotia Group traded 11,272 units to close at $23.75, up 5 cents. Supreme Ventures ended at $3.35 with 92,500 units to be down by 15 cents and Jamaica Money Market Brokers 7.50% preference share traded 75,000 units at $2.
JSE decline continues on Thursday
Proven Investments profit jumps
Proven Investments reports net profit attributable to shareholders of US$1.32 million or 0.24 US cents per share. In 2014 the company reported profit of US$2.25 million or 0.76 cents per share but included net extraordinary gains of US$1.36 million. Of note total comprehensive income is negative $300,000 after recording a loss $1.6 million in unrealized losses.
Revenue for the three months period net of interest cost amounted to US$5.64 million, an increase of 84.45 percent over the three months ended June 2014 of US$3.06. The increased revenue is mainly from the consolidation of Access Financial Service results into the Group.
For the three months ending June 2015, operating expenses increased by 63 percent to US$3.4 million from US$2.1 million in the prior year period as a result of increases in administrative and general expenses, from the inclusion of PWL Transition and AFS in the financials of the Group.
Proven in the commentary accompanying the quarterly results states that earnings per share is 0.24 US cents but in the financials the company reports it as 0.33 US cents. There is no explanation for the difference and no indication in the report of the number of shares issued, a major omission. The company has 551,595,777 issued ordinary shares according to the Jamaica Stock Exchange which means that earnings is 0.2377 US cents per share or 0.95 US cents for the year. The stock at last traded price of 18.5 US cents is selling at 20 times earnings based on the first quarter results annualised in a market that has an average of 6.5 times this year’s earnings.
JSE pushes higher on Tuesday

In trading, Cable and Wireless ended with 3,100,287 units changing hands and lost 3 cents to 39 cents, Caribbean Cement traded 10,250 shares to close at $7.10 after shedding 35 cents, Carreras gained $1 with 6,385 units trading to close at $52, Gleaner traded at $1.30, up 5 cents after 20,000 shares changed hands. Grace Kennedy traded only 1,830 shares at $65, Jamaica Broilers had 18,800 shares changing hands, in closing at $6.50, to record a new 52 weeks’ high. The Jamaica Stock Exchange stock traded 200,445 units at $7, Mayberry Investments had another large trade amounting to 3,982,668 shares trading between $2.75 and $3. National Commercial Bank had 75,894 shares trading and closed with a 25 cents gain to end at $30, Sagicor Group ended trading with 169,015 units at $13, Sagicor Real Estate Fund closed at $8 while trading 584,560 units and traded as high as $9.10 for a new intraday high. The fund had reported before trading, profit of 8 cents per share in the June quarter, down from 11 cents in the June 2014 quarter and 46 cents per share to June, this year versus 27 cents for the six months to June last year. Scotia Group ended with 6,348 units trading at $23.99, for 1 cent fall and Proven Investments traded 15,625 ordinary shares at 19 US cents.
12 stocks rose on JSE on Wednesday
Trading on the Jamaica Stock Market closed on Wednesday with 12 stocks rising, 8 declining as 29 securities changed hands with 6,830,260 units trading, valued at $85,544,632, in all market segments.
At the close, the JSE Market Index gained 122.39 points to 98,333.57, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index increased 136.80 points to close at 108,849.45 and the JSE combined index added 361.61 points to end at 100,639.26.

Gleaner traded unchanged at $1.30 with 123,656 shares changing hands, Grace Kennedy traded just 1,100 shares to gain 99 cents to $64, Jamaica Broilers had 1,424,572 shares changing hands at $5.67 for a 5 cents gain, Jamaica Producers gained 30 cents to close at $18.80 with 10,000 units changing hands. JMMB Group traded 835,324 units to end unchanged at $7.50, Mayberry Investments traded at $2.75 with a fall of 25 cents, with 520,277 units, National Commercial Bank had only 12,940 shares trading, but gained 5 cents to $29.55. Pan Jamaican Investments closed at $61 after adding 95 cents to the price, with 581,167 shares, changing hands valued $36 million, Proven Investments had 81,763 shares trading at 20 US cents, Sagicor Group ended trading with 908,500 units at $13. Scotia Group traded 532,374 units to end 3 cents lower at $24.07, traded 20,812 units, 20 cents higher at $26.80, Seprod traded 15,045 shares lost 10 cents lower at $14.90 and Supreme Ventures with 26,000 shares traded at $3.60 for a rise of 25 cents.
Technical issues hit JSE on Tuesday
The JSE Market Index declined 159.12 points to 97,271.15 the JSE All Jamaican Composite index fell 177.86 points to close at 107,661.94 but the JSE combined index fell just 13.51 points to end at 99,998.57 thanks to gains in the junior market offsetting declines in the main market.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator was showing a poor reading of 10 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 6 with offers that were lower, an improvement over the ratio on Monday of 5 to 5. In trading, Cable & Wireless had 200,000 units changing hands to close at 45 cents but looking better than for weeks with bid at 46 cents to buy 201,436 while the offers at 50 cents declined leaving only 315,000 units at the price. With the company reporting profits from operations of $186 million in the March quarter from revenues of $6 billion, the highest in a March quarter since 2007, investors may be quietly going after the stock. The company confirmed that the quarter had some business to business sales in the revenue figure which helped to push improvement up by 29 percent. Caribbean Cement had 131,225 units trading at $6 after adding 50 cents, Carreras gained 70 cents in trading just 2,382 shares to close at $49. Desnoes and Geddes traded at $7.55 with 54,724 shares, Gleaner ended with 65,885 shares changing hands to gain 11 cents, for a 52 weeks’ high of $1.40. Jamaica Broilers fell 59 cents in trading 7,410 units to end at $5.41, National Commercial Bank in trading 20,960 shares, to close at $29.04, Pan Jamaican Investment had 18,780 shares changing hands 50 cents higher at $61.50. Radio Jamaica ended with 124,000 shares trading at $3.50, Proven Investments ended with 51,900 ordinary share trading at 21 US cents, Sagicor Group gained 45 cents with 22,385 units trading, to end at $13, but had 1 million units on sale at $13 at the close and Proven 8% preference share traded 155,695 units at $5.

The JSE Market Index gained 616.53 points to 97,666.95, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index rose 689.12 points to close at 108,104.34 but the JSE combined index added 631.68 points to end at 100,236.87.

Kingston Wharves climbed 15 cents to $7.15 with 14,071 shares, Montego Bay Ice has not traded in more than two years finally traded today but lost $2.95 to end at $15 while 1,560 shares traded to end at a 52 weeks low. National Commercial Bank rose 40 cents while trading 137,540 shares to close at $29.40, Proven Investments traded 132,278 share to close at 19 US cents, Sagicor Group inched up 9 cents with 105,691 units trading, to end at $12.70, Sagicor Real Estate Fund saw trading in 101,000 units but lost 30 cents in closing at $7.70 and Scotia Investments climbed $1 to $28.50 with 677,500 units, most of the stock traded at $2.
Scotia Group tops trading on Thursday
The JSE Market Index lost 264.93 points to 97,050.42, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index declining by 296.12 points to close at 107,415.22 but the JSE combined index declined 377.15 points to end at 99,605.19.
