The Jamaica Stock Exchange lost ground in early Thursday morning trading with a number of stocks trading high volumes. Leading with volume are Lasco Manufacturing that traded 4,046,000 units at $5, Medical Disposables with 157,858 units at $3.50. Barita Investments traded 213,650 down to $2.50, Grace Kennedy had 303,578 shares trading at $41.68, Sterling Investments traded 395,000 units at $13 and JMMB Group 7.50% preference share traded 2,842,800 units at $1.10.
The market indices all fell in the main but inched up for junior markets, with 14 stocks gaining versus 11 that fell.
The all Jamaica Composite Index fell 690.47 points to 176,934.79 the Jamaica Stock Exchange Market Index dropped 617.40 points to 159,252.93 the Jamaica Stock Exchange combined index lost 538.03 points to close at 170,503.66 points and the junior market index rose 3.37 points to 2,220.72.
At 11 am 23 securities traded, resulting in a volume of 8,615,067 shares changing hands. The average number of shares traded amounts to 246,145 units compared to 29,387 units on Wednesday.
JSE takes another hit- Wednesday
The latest IPO, Portland JSX was listed at the start of trading after a successful public offering that saw the offer being oversubscribed. The stock opened with a bid to buy 30,000 shares for $1 more than the IPO price of $11 at $12 and later traded 8,500 units to end at $12.55 after it started trading at $12.05. The gain hardly did much to the market overall as the day closed with all major indices down.
Trading on the Jamaica stock market on Wednesday remained modest, with just 2,706,984 units valued at $46,242,560 changing hands in all market segments. The junior market accounted for 777,300 shares valued at $4,030,252, of all trades. All market indices lost ground as stocks declining were slightly ahead the ones rising.
A total of 33 securities traded 6 less than on Tuesday, with the prices of 10 stocks rising, 13 declining, including 4 stocks rising and 5 declining from the junior market. Notwithstanding the decline over the past few days, the market continues in a consolidating mode, with the indices rising and falling from day to day, with no new information to cause a break out.
The JSE Market Index dropped 912.73 points to end at 159,796.98. The all Jamaica Composite Index plunged 1,020.75 points to close at 177,543.22 and the JSE combined index dived 1,430.24 points, to end at 170,113.89.

At the end of market activities, Berger Paints traded 36,539 shares unchanged at $4.50, Cable & Wireless recovered 7 cents while trading 32,000 shares to close at $1.17, Caribbean Cement dropped $3 to close at $22 with 33,722 shares trading, Carreras traded 167,915 shares but fell 40 cents to $65, Ciboney traded 28,000 shares at 21 cents. Grace Kennedy gained $2.50 and closed at $123 with 20,869 units changing hands, Jamaica Broilers ended with 7,567 units changing hands to close at $15, Jamaica Producers traded 4,431 units to end at $49, Jamaica Stock Exchange traded 22,596 shares but fell $3 to close at $21, JMMB Group traded 39,505 units and rose 1 cent to end at $9.73. Kingston Wharves traded 4,160 units and gained 99 cents to close at $16 as supply dries up on the stock, National Commercial Bank ended with 46,492 units changing hands at $42. Pan Jamaican Investment Trust lost $1.48 in trading 23,152 shares to close at $24, Sagicor Group ended with 6,055 shares changing hands at $23.05. Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded 906,595 shares to close at $10.12, Scotia Group fell 50 cents with 360,016 shares trading to close at $30.50, Sterling Investments ended with 14,000 shares trading to close with a fall of $1.49 at $11.50. Supreme Ventures lost 49 cents and ended at $4.51 while trading 7,200 units and Proven Investments traded 156,000 units to close at 16.49 US cents, up from 16 US cents.
JSE stocks close higher – Wednesday
The JSE Market Index gained 770.88 points to end at 159,719.08. The all Jamaica Composite Index climbed 862.14 points to close at 177,456.06 and the JSE combined index rose 622.59 points, to end at 171,033.62.

At the end of market activities, Cable & Wireless lost 1 cent to close at $1.26 after trading 55,726 units, Caribbean Cement traded 50,925 shares and closed at $21. Carreras had 10,471 units trading, to close with a rise of 25 cents at $62.80. Trading place in 52,000 shares of 1834 Investments but the price slipped 2 cents to $1.20. Jamaica Broilers traded 44,400 units changing hands with a decline of 30 cents to close at $14.50. Jamaica Producers traded 3,569 shares and gained $1.50 to end at a 52 weeks’ closing high of $48, Jamaica Stock Exchange had 16,693 units changing hands but gained 2 cents to end at $20.02, JMMB Group rose 2 cents in trading 3,000 units to close at $9.82. National Commercial Bank traded 51,295 shares at $41.12 after shedding 40 cents, Pan Jamaican Investment Trust traded 43,090 shares to end at $27. Radio Jamaica closed trading with 3,000 shares with the price rising 23 cents to end at $1.75, Sagicor Group ended with 169,846 shares changing hands after gaining 30 cents to $23, Scotia Group dropped 59 cents to close at $31.41 with 98,123 units changing hands. Scotia Investments traded 133,125 shares to close at $26.10, Seprod traded 4,400 shares unchanged at $17, Sterling Investments traded 6,000 shares with a gain of $1.49 to close at $12.99 and JMMB Group 7.50% preference share ended with 331,396 units traded at $2.10.
JSE volume remains low on Friday
Trading volumes remained low on the Jamaica Stock Exchange on Friday even as the active number of securities remain at elevated levels. The market closed with 35 securities changing hands, accounting for just 3,475,337 units valued at $40,616,397, in all market segments. The junior market had 2,388,762 shares valued at $2,388,762 trading.
Investors pushed the price of 13 stocks in the overall market up, 13 down, including 3 stocks rising and 4 declining, from the junior market. The JSE Market Index moved down by 192.18 points to end at 153,690.27. The all Jamaica Composite Index declined by 214.93 points to close at 170,713.62 and the JSE combined index slipped 54.76 points, to close at 164,532.54.

Hardware and Lumber jumped $3.50 to end at $16 as 500 shares changed hands, Jamaica Broilers closed with a fall of 43 cents at $14.21 while trading 3,664 shares, Jamaica Producers traded 10,000 shares at $35, Margaritaville Turks traded 531,220 to end at 20 US cents. National Commercial Bank traded 37,465 shares, to close with a fall of 19 cents at $39.80. Pan Jamaican Investment climbed back $1.70 to close trading at $122.70 but with just 400 shares changing hands, Radio Jamaica rose 3 cents in trading 70,612 shares at $1.30, Sagicor Group ended with 71,400 shares changing hands, fell 20 cents, to end at $22.30. Scotia Group closed with a fall of $2.70 to end at $30 while 81,365 units changed hands, Scotia Investments fell $1.09 to $25 with 12,880 shares changing hands, Sterling Investments lost 92 cents and closed at $11.98 with 24,800 shares trading. Supreme Ventures closed at $5 with 16,339 shares changing hands, after falling 29 cents and Proven Investments traded with a gain of 2 US cents to 20 US cents with 49,000 shares trading.
