Scotia gives market major push – Tuesday

Berger Paints traded at a 52 weeks’ high on Tuesday

The Jamaica Stock Exchange closed with 43 securities changing hands in all market segments, 18 of which gained and 16 declined. Five stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded at an intraday high of $11.65 as 6,392,546 units valued at only $47,425,214 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 2,288,351 units changed hands, valued at $8,386,950.
The JSE Market Index climbed 1,693.42 points to 163,225.01 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a rise of 1,892.50 points to end at 181,369.46and the JSE combined index gained 1,543.79 points to close at 173,938.49.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reading was 8 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 1 with a lower offer.
At the end of the market activities, Barita Investments ended with 135,900 units trading to close at $4.48 with a gain of 20 cents, in response to 2015 full year results, showing 55 cents per share earnings. Investors also responded favourably to increased nine months results for Berger Paints, by bidding the stock up by 37 cents to end at $4, with 300,001 units traded. Caribbean Cement climbed 39 cents to close at $28.99, with 9,884 shares changing hands, Carreras exchanged 33,751 shares at $61.55 but lost 45 cents. Ciboney traded 1,035,533 and gained 1 cent to end at 24 cents, Gleaner Company traded at 85,044 shares and rose 4 cents to $2.64, Grace Kennedy fell 50 cents and closed at $82.50, with 5,280 units changing hands but the stock traded in Trinidad at $4.20 (J$79.50) on Tuesday. Jamaica Broilers fell 45 cents to $14 with 40,770 shares changing hands, Jamaica Producers gained 85 cents to end at $30 with only 5,250 units trading, Jamaica Stock Exchange closed $20 with 73,700 units trading, JMMB Group traded 9,500 units but fell 9 cents to end at $10.91. Mayberry Investments had 4,278 shares changing hands but rose 10 cents to $4.60, National Commercial Bank traded 20,628 shares but fell 14 cents to close at $42.85, Pulse Investments traded 27,417 shares with a rise of 3 cents to close at $3.25. Sagicor Group closed at $23 with 57,009 units changing hands, Scotia Group had 607,506 shares changing hands to close with a rise of $3.43 at $34.99 but the stock was offered at $32.50 at the close, Scotia Investments had 5,750 shares trading to close with a loss of $2.89 at $27.01. Seprod added 10,303 units and lost $1.49 in ending at $18.51, Sterling Investments had 92,266 units changing hands to close at $13, Supreme Ventures closed at $6.35 after gaining 25 cents with 98,920 units changing hands. Proven Investments ordinary share traded 151,161 units to close at 22 US cents, down from Monday’s 22.89 US cents, Jamaica Money Market Brokers 7.5% preference share traded 469,000 units at $2.10 after dropping back by 15 cents and Proven Investments preference share traded 48,900 units at $5.

JSE in big pull back on Thursday

Main market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange closed with sharp fall in the indices on Thursday with trading volumes being relatively light. Market activities closed with 42 securities changing hands in all market segments, 16 of which gained in the combined markets and 11 declined.
Two stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and one traded at intraday highs as 8,147,718 units valued at $82,326,591 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 2,952,252 units changed hands, valued at $17,175,945.
The JSE Market Index fell sharply by 2,439.44 points to 159,591.63 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a big decline of 2,726.20 points to end at 177,308.95 and the JSE combined index dropped 3,176.12 points to close at 169,880.83.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reading was 16 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 3 with lower offers.
At the end of the market activities, Berger Paints gained 35 cents to end at $3.75 as 403,923 units traded, Cable and Wireless ended with 1,768,646 units changing hands to close at $1.60, Caribbean Cement dropped $3 to close at $25, with 176,469 shares changing hands. Ciboney traded 502,865 units but fell 3 cents to 24 cents, Grace Kennedy jumped $2.69 and closed at $83.49, with 20,140 units changing hands. Jamaica Broilers dropped $1.45 to $14.10 with 186,932 shares changing hands, JMMB Group traded 80,650 units to end at $11. Kingston Wharves traded 27,407 units to close with the loss of 1 cent at $11.14, Margaritaville Turks traded 151,100 shares at 11.05 US cents. Mayberry Investments traded 24,568 shares at $4.51 with a rise of 1 cent, National Commercial Bank traded with a fall of $1 to close at $40,
with 654,604 units changing hands, Pan Jamaican Investment gained $2.50 with 3,346 units changing hands to close at $96.50, Pulse Investments traded 102,235 shares with a rise of 40 cents to close at $3. Sagicor Group gained 45 cents to close at $23.45 with 4,170 units changing hands, Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded 40,881 shares at $11.60, Scotia Group had 8,387 shares changing hands to close with a loss of $1.30 at $30.70, Scotia Investments had 1,920 shares changing hands to close with a gain of $3.50 at $30. Supreme Ventures closed at $6 to record a loss of 55 cents with 221,810 units changing hands, Proven Investments ordinary share gained 2.98 US cents in trading 691,400 units to close at 22.98 US cents, JMMB 7.5% preference share traded 70,222 units at $2.25 and Proven Investments preference share traded 49,000 units at $5.

Caribbean Cement shares closed at a new high of $28

Main market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange closed with moderate gains in the indices on Wednesday with trading volumes being light. Market activities close with 42 securities changing hands in all market segments of which 16 securities in the combined markets gained and 12 declined.
Five stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and one traded at intraday highs as 4,514,100 units valued at $80,222,876 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 920,944 units changed hands, valued at $5,787,289.
The JSE Market Index jumped sharply by 2,558.24 points to 162,031.07 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a big gain of 2,858.97 points to end at 180,035.15 and the JSE combined index rose 2,543.90 points to close at 173,056.95.

Sagicor Group closed at $23 with 7,704 units changing hands, Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded 52,946 shares at $11.60, Scotia Group had 179,497 shares changing hands to close with a gain of $1.50 at $32, Scotia Investments had 200,000 shares changing hands to close with a decline of $3.49 at $26.50. Seprod rose 50 cents to close at $20.50 with 109,692 units changing hands. Supreme Ventures closed at a 52 weeks’ closing high of $6.55 to record a gain of 6 cents with 64,920 units changing hands, the stock traded at an all-time high of $6.90 during the day, Proven Investments ordinary share lost 2 US cents in trading 1,244,550 units at 20 US cents and JMMB 7.5% preference share traded 137,308 units at $2.25.

Main market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange closed with moderate gains in the indices on Tuesday with trading volumes being light. Market activities picked up from the 33 securities that traded on Monday to close with 43 changing hands in all market segments of which 22 securities in the combined markets gained and 14 declined.
Eight stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and one traded at intraday highs as 4,319,632 units valued at $43,703,774 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 1,200,794 units changed hands, valued at $5,249,310.
The JSE Market Index advanced by 147.39 points to 159,472.83 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a gain of 164.72 points to end at 177,176.18 and the JSE combined index rose 175.31 points to close at 170,513.05.

Grace’s $160m trade on Monday

Grace Kennedy traded 1.9m shares valued at $160m on Monday.

Main market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange closed with strong gains in the indices on Monday as Grace Kennedy traded 1.9 million units carrying a value of $160 million. The other big trade was in National Commercial Bank shares with over 2 million units changing hands with a value of $88.6 million.
Market activities slowed with only 33 securities changing hands in all market segments compared to recent levels around 40 or more per day for January. At the close of trading session, the combined index added 2,291 points with 13 securities in the combined markets gaining and 16 declining.
Three stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and two traded at intraday highs as 8,596,958 units valued at $285,106,122 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 1,200,794 units changed hands, valued at $ 5,249,310.
The JSE Market Index advanced by 2,618.88 points to 159,325.44 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a gain of 2,926.75 points to end at 177,011.46 and the JSE combined index rose 2,290.59 points to close at 170,337.74.

138 Student Living had 12.5m ordinary shares trading on Friday

138 Student Living traded 12.5 million shares valued at $66.25 million Friday on the Jamaica Stock Exchange with the stock ending at an all-time high of $5.30 after rising by 20 cents in a trading session that saw over 300 points being cut from the main market indices.
The number of securities changing hands remained high with 44 changing hands on Friday, in all market segments. At the close, 16 securities in the combined markets gained and 13 declined.
Five stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and two traded at intraday high as 17,493,274 units valued at $112,767,164 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 1,058,983 units changed hands, valued at $6,002,466.
The JSE Market Index fell by 318.51 points to 156,706.56 the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with a loss of 355.96 points to end at 174,084.71 and the JSE combined index declined 246.21 points to close at 168,047.15.

The Jamaica Stock Exchange continues to enjoy wide participation of securities with 42 changing hands on Wednesday in all market segments but with sharply higher value compared with recent trading days. At the close, 14 securities in the combined markets gained and 14 declined but price changes overall were moderate.
Three stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and two traded at intraday high as 26,456,207 units valued at $400,593,508 changed hands in all markets, Mayberry Investments traded 10.7 million units and the Jamaica Stock Exchange with 5.9 million units and 4 others trading over 1 million units each. The junior market accounted for 1,738,498 units, valued at $9,189,436.
The JSE Market Index eked out an increase of 71.84 points to 155,817.53, the all Jamaica Composite Index closed with an increase of 80.29 points to end at 173,091.18 and the JSE combined index rose by 42.84 points to close at 167,212.92.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reached an elevated level indicating several rising prices ahead with reading of 17 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and only 5 with lower offers.

JSE had a sharp jump on Monday

Scotia Group once more pushed up the JSE indices with big gains on Monday.

Trading levels on the Jamaica Stock Exchange continues to be buoyant with 43 securities changing hands on Monday in all market segments but with reduced value compared with recent past trading days. At the close 23 securities in the combined markets gained and 15 declined.

The main market indices climbed sharply again as Scotia Group shot up to $34.99 in early trading, to help push up the indices by the big moves, but the indices could fall back on Tuesday The JSE Market Index climbed 3,705.74 points to 159,979.58, the all Jamaica Composite Index is down with a jump of 4,141.39 points to end at 177,742.51 and the JSE combined index surged by 3,281.87 points to close at 171,105.92.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reached an elevated level indicating several rising prices ahead with reading of 12 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and only 3 with lower offers.

In trading, Barita Investments traded 12,000 shares and gained 10 cents to close at $4.50, for a 52 weeks’ high, Berger Paints closed at $3.30 as the price fell 45 cents with 27,730 units trading, Cable and Wireless ended with 166,850 units changing hands to close with a loss of 2 cent to $1.43. Caribbean Cement traded with an increase of 49 cents and closed at $24.49 with 26,583 shares trading. Ciboney traded 104,035 units with a fall 1 cent to end at 24 cents, Gleaner Company traded 4,573 shares and lost 2 cents to close at $2.68, Grace Kennedy closed at $80.21, with 5,653 units changing hands. Jamaica Broilers rose 25 cents to close at $11.75 with 34,714 shares changing hands. Jamaica Producers had 39,294 shares trading as the price rose by 70 cents to $33, Jamaica Stock Exchange closed at $20 while trading 26,333 shares, JMMB Group traded 287,100 units to end with a loss of 27 cents at $11.50. Investments traded 101,452 shares and gained 5 cents to end at $4.75, National Commercial Bank ended with a rise of 59 cents at $41.10, with 51,157 units changing hands. Pan Jamaican Investments fell 5 cents to close at $94.01 with 15,238 shares trading. Radio Jamaica lost 50 cents in trading 11,303 shares to close at $5.50. Sagicor Group rose 17 cents to close at $22.97 with 16,782 units changing hands. Scotia Group rose 51 cents with 291,386 shares changing hands to close at $30.60 after trading earlier at $34.99, Supreme Ventures gained 42 cents to end at $5.12 with 171,360 units changing hands at a new 52 weeks’ closing high and Proven Investments ordinary share traded 32,550 units at 21 US cents, down from 22 US cents on Friday.

More decline for JSE on Friday

JPS preference share rose $76 on Friday to $1,201.

Trading levels on the Jamaica Stock Exchange continues to be buoyant with 40 securities changing hands on Friday in all market segments. At the close 17 securities in the combined markets gained and 15 declined.
Eight stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and 3 at intraday highs as 6,458,590 units valued at $100,762,294 changed hands in all markets, with the junior market accounting for 2,572,307 units that changed hands, valued at $13,732,252.
While all main market indices fell the declines were less than on Thursday, with the JSE Market Index dropping 1,351.93 points to 156,273.84, the all Jamaica Composite Index falling with 1,510.87 points to end at 173,601.12 and the JSE combined index diving 1,405.00 points to close at 167,824.05.

In trading, Barita Investments traded 134,925 shares and gained 50 cents to close at $4.40, Berger Paints closed at $3.75 as the price rose 55 cents with 18,500 units trading, Cable and Wireless ended with 257,600 units changing hands to close with a gain of 1 cent to $1.45. Caribbean Cement traded more orderly on Friday, than it did on Thursday when there were wild price swings and closed today with an increase of $2 to $24 with 4,884 shares trading. Carreras fell 5 cents to end at $60 with 60,210 units changing hands, Gleaner Company traded 7,400 shares to gain 30 cents to close at $2.70, Grace Kennedy closed at $80.21, with 20,240 units changing hands. Jamaica Broilers fell $1.51 to close at $11.50 with 256,650 shares changing hands. Jamaica Producers had 3,570 shares trading as the price rose by 10 cents to $32.30, Jamaica Stock Exchange gained $1 and closed at a 52 weeks’ high of $20 while trading 200,000 shares, JMMB Group traded 83,100 units to end with a loss of 18 cents at $11.77. Kingston Wharves traded 8,341 units to close at $11.15, Margaritaville Turks came into its own after reporting profits of US$518,134 in the six months to November last year versus $279,000 in 2014. The stock traded 1,128,920 units at 10.5 US cents each. Mayberry Investments traded 327,979 shares and lost 2 cents to end at $4.70, National Commercial Bank ended with a loss of 99 cents at $40.51 with 257,266 units changing hands, Pan Jamaican Investments fell 9 cents to close at $94.06 with 8,528 shares trading.
138 Student Living Jamaica traded 985 shares at a 52 weeks’ high of $5.10, after rising by 35 cents, Radio Jamaica gained 40 cents in trading 32,400 shares to close at a 52 weeks’ high of $6. Sagicor Group fell 65 cents to close at $22.80 with 365,894 units changing hands, Scotia Group dropped $4.90 with 346,798 shares changing hands to close at $30.09, Scotia Investments recovered the $3.10 it lost on Thursday to close at $29.90 after 18,469 units traded. Seprod dropped $2.49 with 83,600 shares trading and closed at $18.51, Supreme Ventures gained 4 cents to end at $4.70 with 70,820 units changing hands, Proven Investments ordinary share traded 40,730 units at 22 US cents, down from 22.99 US cents.
Jamaica Public Service 9.5% preference share traded for the first time in months, with 33,000 units valued at $39,633,000 changing hands to close at a 52 weeks’ high of $1,201, for an increase of $76 and Proven Investments 8% preference shares traded 100,000 units at $5.

JSE suffers big drop on thursday

Scotia Group caused major swing in the JSE index on Wednesday & Thursday.

The recorded closing price for Scotia Group in yesterdays’ trading was $34.23 according to the Jamaica Stock exchange rules, but the stock last traded at $30.10. The stock exchange indices are based on the weighted average price making Scotia Group the main mover to push up the market index sharply on Wednesday based on the JSE recognized closing price.
In today’s trading, the stock last traded at $34.99 but the official closing price is $31.87, the end, the market index dropped sharply, resulting in major swings in the market, despite the JSE’s attempt to use the weighted averages to set the final closing price for a day, in an effort to cut closing price manipulation and its impact on the indices.
There were relatively large trades in excess of 2 million units, in National Commercial Bank, Sagicor Group and Supreme Ventures. The high number of stocks participating in trading on the exchange continued on Thursday with 44 active securities in all market segments. At the close 24 securities in the combined markets gained and 9 declined. Four stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and 3 at intraday highs as 20,376,982 units valued at $295,286,830 changed hands in all markets, with the junior market accounting for 2,815,123 units changed hands, valued at $15,357,167.
The JSE Market Index dropped 3,221.67 points to 157,625.77, the all Jamaica Composite Index made a sharp downturn with 3,600.40 points to end at 175,111.99 and the JSE combined index dived by 3,710.78 points to close at 169,229.05.

The price fell $3.10 to $22, with 87,713 shares trading. At the close there were 2,203,900 units offered for sale at $28. Carreras rose 5 cents to end at $60.05 with 34,895 units changing hands, Gleaner Company traded 145,708 shares to close at with a loss of 30 cents at $2.40, Grace Kennedy fell to $80.21, with a fall of $3.79, as 114,095 units changed hands. Jamaica Broilers jumped $1.51 to close at $13.01 with 317,655 shares changing hands, for a new 52 weeks’ high. Jamaica Producers had 5,000 shares trading as the price moved up by 60 cents to $32.20, Jamaica Stock Exchange closed at $19 while trading 900 shares, at the close the bid was at $19.50 for only 340 units, JMMB Group traded 94,158 units to end with a loss of 5 cents at $11.95. Kingston Wharves traded 80,823 units but lost 5 cents to close at $11.15, Mayberry Investments traded just 2,540 shares and lost 8 cents to end at $4.72, National Commercial Bank ended with a gain of 1 cent at $41.50 with 2,096,961 units changing hands, Pan Jamaican Investments fell $1.85 to close at $94.15 with 5,247 shares trading. Radio Jamaica traded 21,940 shares but closed $5.60.
