JSE main market sharp turn – Wednesday
A total of 9,862,201 units valued at $166,875,309 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 2,918,009 units changing hands, valued at $20,407,860.
The JSE Market Index suffered a big fall of 1,632.23 points to 157,641.47 the all Jamaica Composite Index dropped 1,824.11 points to end at 175,129.53 and the JSE combined index dumped by 1,936.89 points to close at 167,385.98.

At the end of the market activities, Cable and Wireless closed with a gain of 10 cents as 103,800 units changed hands at $1.56. Caribbean Cement fell $4 to close at $30 with 1,133,522 shares changing hands, Carreras closed at $65, while trading 205,078 units, Ciboney ended at 14 cents with 210,000 shares trading, Grace Kennedy ended with 7,150 shares trading to close at $83. Jamaica Broilers climbed 45 cents with 426,559 units to close at $14.76, JMMB Group had 637,636 units changing hands with a loss of 59 cents to close at $10.41. Kingston Wharves had 14,225 shares trading with a gain of 5 cents at $11.45, Margaritaville Turks traded 506,000 shares at 15 US cents, Mayberry Investments traded 76,234 units to close at $4.80 for a rise of 10 cents, National Commercial Bank had 514,148 shares changing hands with a gain of 1 cent to close at $41. Pulse Investments traded 5,900 shares with a fall of 70 cents to end at $3.70, Sagicor Group fell 1 cent with 784,897 shares changing hands at $22.10, Sagicor Real Estate Fund fell 30 cents with 8,888 shares changing hands at $11.70, Salada Foods traded 19,327 units at $9.25. Scotia Group had 328,060 shares changing hands, to close with a loss of $1.50 to end at $31.50, Scotia Investments had 297,000 units changing hands at $30, after rising 75 cents, Supreme Ventures fell 1 cent to close at $5.51 with 1,230,000 units changing hands. JMMB Group 7.5% preference share traded 167,678 units at $2.10 and Proven Investments ordinary share traded 262,083 units at 20 US cents.
Carreras dividend yielded 20% in 2015
Carreras will be paying an interim dividend of $1.80 per share to shareholders on March 17 and brings the total dividend in the last twelve months to $8.94 for a yield of 20.2 percent based on the stock price of $44.10 at the beginning of March 2015.
In 2015, the company paid an ordinary dividend of $1.40 per share in December, a special capital cash distribution of $1.94 per on December 17, one dollar and twenty cents ($1.20) per share in September 3, two dollars ($2.00) per share unit in June a special capital cash distribution of sixty cents ($0.60) per share in September. March 12, last year an interim dividend of one dollar and sixty ($1.60) per share was paid.
The stock is now trading at $66.50 on the Jamaica Stock Exchange. Dividends to come are not likely to be as high as in 2015. The special dividends that were paid, should be at an end, leaving only ordinary dividends to be paid, as such the yield is likely to fall to just over 10 percent based on the current price.
Carreras profit up but report wrong
Carreras recorded moderate growth of 6 percent in the December quarter last year with profit after tax of $851 million from $800 million in the similar period in 2014, but the report issued by the company on the Stock Exchange has the September 2014 quarterly as the comparative December figures.
For the nine months to December, profits rose 16 percent to $2.27 billion from $1.97 billion.
Revenues grew for the nine months by 8 percent to $9.3 billion, up from $8.67 billion, while revenues grew 7 percent for the quarter from $3.3 billion to $3.55 billion.
Apart from the improvement in revenues which helped to improve profits, administrative cost were lower in the quarter, falling to $332 million from $512 million and for the nine months to $1 billion from $1.08 billion while Distribution and marketing cost rose moderately in the nine months to $512 million but the quarterly figure jumped from only $76 million to $245 million in 2015.
Cash funds stood at $3 billion but $1.1 billion is due to be paid for corporation taxes but shareholders’ capital $1.98 billion which is down from $3.1 billion at March 2015.
Earnings per share came in at $4.68 for the nine months and $1.86 for the quarter with full year’s earnings heading for $6.70 per share net asset value turns out at $4.05. The stock last traded at $66 on the Jamaica Stock Exchange on Friday for a PE of 10.

More retreat for JSE on Thursday

The JSE Market Index dived 913.83 points to 157,322.61 the all Jamaica Composite Index dropped 1,021.27 points to end at 174,773.18 and the JSE combined index dumped by 972.44 points to close at 168,580.74.

Caribbean Cement jumped 50 cents to close at $30.50 with 11,868 shares changing hands, Carreras jumped $1.30 to close at $67, to end at a 52 weeks’ high while trading 150,641 units, Gleaner traded 57,510 shares but rose 5 cents to $2.50, Grace Kennedy ended with 2,449 shares trading to close at $82.25 after dropping 75 cents. Jamaica Broilers fell 75 cents with 244,239 units to close at $13.75, Jamaica Stock Exchange ended with 210,710 shares trading but lost 5 cents to close at $21.95, JMMB Group dropped 25 cents in trading 38,315 units at $11. Kingston Wharves had 5,900 shares trading at $11.40, Mayberry Investments traded 16,800 units to close at $4.80 for a rise of 30 cents, National Commercial Bank traded 45,262 shares to close at $40.30 after declining by $1.20, while 138 Students Living traded 146,285 shares with a fall of 10 cents to end at $5.60. Proven Investments traded 32,164 shares at 20 US cents, Radio Jamaica traded 17,651 units but fell 5 cents to $4.60, Sagicor Group fell 82 cents with 15,459 shares changing hands at $22.11, Scotia Group had 177,068 shares changing hands to close with a gain of 99 cents to end at $33. Scotia Investments had 1,200 units changing hands at $27 after dropping $3. Seprod closed at $22, with 104,200 shares trading, Supreme Ventures fell 10 cents to close at $5.90 with 48,200 units changing hands, Jamaica Money Market Brokers 7.50% preference share traded 66,900 at $2.15 and Proven Investments preference share traded 502,476 units at $5.

Jamaica Stock Exchange ended with 3,000 shares trading but lost 50 cents to close at $22, JMMB Group dropped 75 cents in trading 94,905 units at $11.25, Kingston Wharves had 38,100 shares trading at $11.40, Mayberry Investments traded 26,020 units to close at $4.50. National Commercial Bank traded 183,199 shares to close at $40 after rising by $1.50, while 138 Students Living traded 354,615 shares with a rise of 20 cent to end at $5.70, Pan Jamaican Investment traded only 334 units with a rise of $1.45 to end at $96. Scotia Group had 173,359 shares changing hands to close with a fall of $1.99 to end at $32.01, Scotia Investments had 6,000 units changing hands at $30 after jumping $3.45. JSE loses big in early trading
The Jamaica Stock Exchange got to a negative start with the indices all slipping after 75 minutes of trading with 13 stocks falling and only 6 rising as 35 securities have been active with only 933,812 units changing hands.
Big moves have been Carreras up 90 cents to $65, Grace Kennedy down $1 to $83 with limited volume, Jamaica Stock Exchange up $2.50 to $22.50 and Seprod with a rise of $2 to $22.
The all Jamaica Composite Index dropped 1,469.33 points to 179,042.71, the JSE Market Index lost 1,314.77 points to 161,143.02, the JSE combined index fell 1,351.04 points to 172,732.49 and the junior market index dropped 12.32 points to 2,301.46.
C&W, Pan Jam dominant plays – Friday
Trading resulted 38 securities trading, 16 of which gained and 14 declined. Six stocks closed at 52 weeks’ highs and 3 at intraday highs as 11,326,742 units valued at $259,795,288 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 2,619,072 units changed hands, valued at $10,651,233.
The JSE Market Index fell 412.90 points to 159,295.05 the all Jamaica Composite Index dropped 461.44 points to end at 176,977.50 and the JSE combined index declined 553.68 points to close at 170,686.48.

Jamaica Broilers traded 406,083 units and gained $1.45 to $14.95, JMMB Group jumped $1.95 in trading 8,350 units to end at 52 weeks’ high of $13.70. Kingston Wharves rose 26 cents with 10,545 units changing hands at $11.45, Margaritaville Turks had 30,900 shares trading at a 52 weeks’ high of 15 US cents, Mayberry Investments gained 30 cents to close at $5 with 130,126 units traded, National Commercial Bank traded 347,478 shares to close at $41.50. Pulse Investments traded 5,000 shares to end at a 52 weeks’ high of $4.65 after rising by 45 cents, Sagicor Group rose 5 cents and closed at $23.05 with 370,399 units changing hands. Sagicor Real Estate Fund gained 20 cents to close at $12 while trading 10,023 shares, Scotia Group had 231,306 shares changing hands with a loss of $2.50 to close at $31.50.
