The Jamaica Stock Exchange recorded modest gains in the early morning session on Thursday with mostly light trading volume as investors continue to digest results of companies and the impact of the change in government. The markets, however, seems to be settling down have undergone a fair bit of correction.
After 90 minutes of the market opening, 27 securities traded, accounting for only 3,773,743 shares changing hands. A total of 10 stocks declined and 6 rose.
The all Jamaica Composite Index gained 60.42 points to 171,393.09, the JSE Market Index rose by 54.06 points to 154,298.06, the JSE combined index 136.94 points to 163,126.30 and the junior market index rose 9.53 points to 1,952.58.
Honey Bun traded at a new all-time high of $16.50 after gaining $2.250 while trading 2,000 shares, National Commercial Bank traded 2,704,860 shares down to $40, Carreras traded 60,983 units at $65, Lasco Distributors traded steady with 95,500 at $5.50, Caribbean Cement rose $1.55 with 21,991 shares to trade at $22.18 and now has the bid at $22.15 to buy 100,000 shares, JMMB Group traded 212265 units at $10.42.

JSE suffered from uncertainty – Wednesday
The JSE Market Index suffered a fall of 191.17 points to 154,244.00 the all Jamaica Composite Index dropped 213.64 points to end at 171,332.67 and the JSE combined index dropped 224.85 points to close at 162,989.36. The main market recovered from losses in the indices in the morning session with the all Jamaican Composite Index dropping more than 1,000 points.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator reading was 14 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 11 with lower offers.
At the end of the market activities, Cable and Wireless gained 5 cents as 9,498 units changed hands to close at $1.50, Caribbean Cement rose $1.56 on Wednesday to end at $22.06 with 123,032 shares trading, Carreras closed with a gain of 50 cents at $65, while trading 216,663 units. Gleaner Company gained 5 cents to close at $2 as 101,689 shares changed hands, Grace Kennedy ended with 3,541 shares trading to close at $83 after declining by $1, the stock traded in Trinidad at the equivalent of $94 on Wednesday. Jamaica Broilers rose 50 cents after trading 566,345 units to close at $14.50, Jamaica Producers ended with 1,323,480 shares changing hands at $30, the stock traded at an intraday high of $35.05, Jamaica Stock Exchange traded 524 shares to end at $23 as the price gained $2, JMMB Group had 290,907 units changing hands to close at $10.42. Kingston Wharves had 1,361 shares trading with a fall of 13 cents at $11.31, Mayberry Investments traded 12,224 shares to close with a gain of 57 cents at $5.08, National Commercial Bank had 85,093 shares changing hands but the price rose by 14 cents to close at $40.15. 138 Student Living traded 22,500 shares at $5.80, Pan Jamaican Investments gained 80 cents while trading 33,044 units at $95, Sagicor Group rose 48 cents with 697,261 shares changing hands at $23.50, Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded 26,820 shares but the price fell 20 cents to $11.30. Scotia Group had 57,321 shares changing hands to close with a loss of 1 cent at $30.99, Scotia Investments rose $1.37 with 110,000 units changing hands at $28. Supreme Ventures fell by 9 cents and closed at $5.90 with 26,034 units changing hands and JMMB Group 7.50% preference share traded 160,000 units at $1.20.
JSE’s main indices get hit – Wednesday
The Jamaica Stock Exchange continues to struggle in the early morning session on Wednesday with very moderate trading as investors continue to digest results of companies and the impact of the change in government.
After 75 minutes of the market opening, 27 securities traded, accounting for only 1,657,243 shares changing hands. A total of 7 stocks declined and 10 rose.
The all Jamaica Composite Index dived 1,047.22 points to 170,499.09, the JSE Market Index dropped 937.06 points to 153,498.11, the JSE combined index lost 830.99 points to 162,383.22 and the junior market index rose 5.81 points to 1,953.80.
Lasco Distributors traded steady with 763135 at $5.50, Caribbean Cement rose $1.55 with 104,207 shares to trade at $22.05, JMMB Group traded 254,607 units at $10.50, Jamaica Producers traded 40,581 shares but lost $1 to be trading at $29 and Scotia Investments traded 100,000 to recover from $26.63 at the close on Tuesday to $28.
JSE’s 2nd day of big hits – Tuesday
The Jamaica Stock Exchange continues to struggle in the early morning session on Tuesday with low trading interest as some companies in the main market report profits that are at levels that do lend strength to the current prices. The market may also be showing uncertainty with the change in government as investors await clear signals of the economic direction of the new government.
After 75 minutes of the market opening, 34 securities traded, accounting for only 2,183,719 shares changing hands. A total of 15 stocks declined and 7 rose.
The all Jamaica Composite Index dived 1,901.51 points to 172,175.07, the JSE Market Index dropped 1,701.49 points to 154,997.79, the JSE combined index lost 1,568.71 points to 163,779.61 and the junior market index rose 3.94 points to 1,951.85.
Caribbean Cement fell $4 with 28,835 shares to trade at $20, after the company reported full year results to December last year with earnings of $1.82 after exceptional charges. Gleaner Company traded 990,620 and declined 32 cents after falling by 35 cents in yesterday morning session and now trades at $1.98. Jamaica Broilers fell $1 to $13.50 JMMB Group declined 42 cents to $10.58 the Jamaica Stock Exchange is down 50 cents to $23 and Mayberry Investments traded 401,938 units and lost 29 cents to $4.51 in response to 2015 results that melted away in the final quarter with heavy investment portfolio losses.
Mixed trading on Monday
The Jamaica Stock Exchange is undergoing mix fortunes in losses in the early morning session on Monday with the junior market stock index rising and majors falling. After 75 minutes of the market opening, 30 securities traded, accounting for only 717,672 shares changing hands. A total of only 3 stocks fell and 10 rose.
The all Jamaica Composite Index lost 128.70 points to 174,697.27, the JSE Market Index fell 115.16 points to 157,254.68, the JSE combined index gained 81.15 points to 166,137.37 and the junior market index rose 21 points to 1,977.28.
Caribbean Cement fell $4 with 36,000 shares to be at $26, after the company reported full year results to December last year with earnings of $1.82 after an exceptional charge and one off income. Carreras traded just 100 but gained $1.60 to $65.70, Gleaner Company traded 123,047 but fell 35 cents to $2.10.
Moderate gains for JSE majors – Thursday
With polls suggesting a tight race in the general election on Thursday, the Jamaica Stock Exchange main market continued to reflect uncertainty on Thursday as 15 securities declined, 13 gained as 33 changed hands in all market segments in a shortened session. Trading resulted in 1 stock closing at 52 weeks’ highs.
A total of 6,057,172 units valued at $98,493,384 changed hands in all markets. The junior market accounted for 2,076,968 units changing hands, valued at $12,398,257.
The JSE Market Index added 31.86 points to end at 157,673.33 the all Jamaica Composite Index squeezed out 35.60 points to end at 175,165.13 and the JSE combined index dropped 841.58 points to close at 166,544.40.

Caribbean Cement continues with wild price swings, rising $3 to close at $33 with 36,000 shares changing hands, Carreras closed at $66 after gaining $1, while trading 31,891 units, Gleaner ended with a gain of 1 cent to close at $2.43 with 69,622 shares trading, Grace Kennedy ended with 25,660 shares trading to close at $82.50 after losing 50 cents. Jamaica Broilers fell 26 cents with 583,521 units to close at $14.50, JMMB Group had 280,100 units changing hands to close at $10.41. Kingston Wharves had 68,371 shares trading with a loss of 1 cent at $11.44, National Commercial Bank had 1,182,454 shares changing hands with a fall of 60 cent to close at $40.40. Palace Amusement dropped by $13 to close at $74 with 100 shares trading, Pan Jamaican traded 4,231 shares but fell $1 to $94.50, Pulse Investments traded 206,000 shares with a fall of 48 cents to end at $3.22. Sagicor Group gained 45 cents with 4,270 shares changing hands at $23.50, Sagicor Real Estate Fund rose 25 cents with 1,000 shares changing hands at $11.95, Scotia Group had 136,020 shares changing hands, to close with a gain of 50 cents to end at $32. Scotia Investments had 7,550 units changing hands at $30, Supreme Ventures rose 49 cents to close at $6 with 114,353 units changing hands. JMMB Group 5.75% preference share traded 380,000 units at $1.06, JMMB Group 7.5% preference share traded 200,000 units and rose 5 cents to end at $2.15 and Proven Investments ordinary share traded 500,000 units at 21 US cents after rising by 1 US cent.

After 75 minutes of the market opening, 28 securities have been active, accounting for 3,867,042 shares. A total of 14 stocks fell and only 6 rose.
The all Jamaica Composite Index lost -266.70 points to 174,862.83, the JSE Market Index fell 238.64 points to 157,402.83, the JSE combined index declined by 465.66 points to 166,920.32 and the junior market index dropped 26.64 points to 2,048.48.
Caribbean Cement gained $3 with 36,000 shares to be at $33, Jamaica Broilers Group traded 575,591 at $14.50, National Commercial Bank traded 1,181,244 shares at $40.70, Palace dropped $13 while 100 shares traded at $74, Honey Bun had 5,000 shares changing hands at a new high of $13.90 and Lasco Manufacturing down 21 cents to $3.61 with 779,866 units.
