Captain Marvel on Palace screens

Captain Marvel marks the big screen debut of the character, Carol Danvers, played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by Academy Award® winner Brie Larson.
In the comics, Danvers was a test pilot who gained super strength and the ability to fly after being caught in an explosion with a Kree device.
As her journey unfolds, as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes. While a galactic war between two alien races reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself and a small cadre of allies at the center of the battle. This is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Mississipi Grind helmers, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck direct from a script written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet, Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve. The star studded cast of Captain Marvel includes Academy Award® nominees Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law and Djimon Hounsou, and Golden Globe winner® Annette Bening.
Not only is Captain Marvel preparing to dominate the North American box office when it hits theaters this weekend, but the Brie Larson vehicle is also looking to go binary over in China.
According to a news report, Captain Marvel is expected to make about US$100 million on its opening weekend in China, making it another massive entry in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe. At this point, the ticket pre-sales have already passed those of Dr. Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Ant-Man and the Wasp. The same report suggests that the film’s pre-sales will also top Black Panther, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and possibly even Captain America: Civil War before it is finally released

JSE – directors cannot override AGM decision

Palace Multiplex in Montego Bay.

Palace Amusement shareholders approved a dividend of $2 per shares at the annual general meeting held in December last year with the record date of January 7 and payment to be made on January 18.
IC insider.com was informed that the Jamaica Stock Exchange stopped the payment. In discussion with the JSE they indicated that the company did not comply with the rules of the exchange to inform them of the dividend. Accordingly, the change in dividend payment was to allow for the public to have notice of the ex-dividend date.
That of course is only partially true, while the company did not advise the exchange when the directors were to meet to approve the dividend and what was the outcome of the meeting. The exchange had adequate notice of the payment from October 31. The exchange JSE staff did nothing about the information that they got and approved for posting on their website.
The company’s directors’ report clearly states that the dividend had an xd dividend date of January 4 with the payment to be made on January 18. The annual report was posted on the JSE website from October. The directors, report along with the audited report were put to the meeting for acceptance which was done.

Andre Tulloch, head of the JSE regulatory arm.

Shareholders after approving the directors’ report, approved the resolution for the payment of the dividend, effectively agreeing to ex dividend and payment dates as set out in the directors report.
In the wisdom of the Jamaica Stock Exchange, they ignored the supremacy of the AGM and forced the company to submit information to change all the dates relating to the dividend. They failed to understand that the directors have no powers to change what the shareholders approved, and if a change is to be made, then the directors would need to call a general meeting to get shareholders to make the change. The correct remedy would have been some reprimand not a call for a non-legal action.
The requirements of the JSE is that any meeting at which a dividend is to be consider should be communicated to the JSE no later than 7 days before the date of the meeting and within 48 days of the meeting the decision taken. This was not done by Palace, but the JSE who had notice of the declaration from the end of October, did nothing about it for more than two months.
On 17 January, a posting on the JSE website showed that the record date was changed to January 31. The posting stated the “Palace Amusement (PAL)  has advised that following decision made at their Annual General Meeting in December 2018, to pay a dividend of $2 per stock, the payment will be made on February 8, 2019, to the shareholders on record as at January 31, 2019,  The ex-dividend date is January 30, 2019.”
The added problem is that shares were traded in January after the xd date of January 4. The seller would have expected to collect the dividend that was approved. It also means that cheques already drawn, may have to be redone, to record the new record date.
The JSE has clearly, made a huge error in this matter and should immediately correct it, to prevent a messy situation from getting worse. You cannot correct a wrong by another wrong.

Barita is stock to watch this week

The main stock of interest this week is Barita Investments that came into buying interest this past week leading the price to move to $12.95, this one seems headed higher in the short term as the supply that  is on the market has been taken out with few stocks on offer now.
Bulls pushed the Jamaican stock market, to new heights last week, with the main market having 11 straight days of record highs and the Junior Market cleared the historical high reached in 2017, in the past week as well.
NCB Financial that was in the spotlight for the past two weeks, still has buying interest but seems to be having most bids around the $120 mark and may find it tough to break over the $130 mark where it traded during the past week.
While the stock is trading close the $130 mark in Jamaica, it is trading in Trinidad around J$115 and that may hold back the price from moving much higher locally until the price in the twin island state picks up. Scotia Group reported profit that showed gains, some of it was non-recurring income and exceptional foreign exchange gains that seems unlikely to repeat anytime soon.
While the supply of several of the main market stocks being scarce, the main market is just under 15,000 points from a major resistance level at 400,000 points and that could stymie much more movement in the short term, with some prices having moved quite a bit recently. There are several stocks priced well below the market’s average and that could encourage buying interest in them.

NCB stock closed at $129 on Friday.

Investors should keep their eyes on a number of stocks this week. NCB Financial that closed on $115, should move higher this week as demand continues to build and with limited supply on offer.
Grace Kennedy may not be ready to break out of the $60 range as yet but it’s a stock to keep an eye on. Caribbean Cement keeps trading between $46 to $50, but there appears no real desire to move the price forward. Kingston Wharves traded at a record high of $75 on limited volume in the past week but pulled back slightly to $72 at the close with a PE ratio of 46 is compared to a market average of 14.6. Supply of the stocks remain low, but some investors keep on buying. Sygnus Credit Investments picked up last week and moved back within a cent of the IPO price, buoyed by full year results of US$1.4 million. The PE ratio is 11.4, well below the market average of 14.6, that will encourage more interest in the stock. Jamaica Producers has very limited volume on offer and that could help buying at higher prices in spite of a PE of 28, twice the market average. Stanley Motta with a PE of 11 based on 2019 earnings has been recovering for the recent decline and is one to watch.
In the Junior Market, Indies Pharma, came in for continued buying that pushed the price to a record high of $4.10 on Friday against very limited supply. Some selling came into the market on Friday to ease the buying pressure on the price which could stick around the current level of $4 for a while. Bulls came in and bought out a big parcel of Access Financial that was on offer for weeks but the $50 level seems a barrier in the short term. Demand is building for Elite Diagnostic while supply has waned.

Jamaica Producers stock in demand in spite of high price.

General Accident could move higher as more demand comes in for it with limited selling, but investors may not want to be more aggressive with this stock at this time. If the company were to announce expansion into the Eastern Caribbean it may well make a difference.
Stocks with scarce supplies that could spring surprises include, Grace Kennedy, NCB Financial, Berger Paints, Caribbean Cement, Kingston Wharves, PanJam Investment, Sagicor Group, Salada Foods, Seprod and Scotia Group.
The Junior Market supplies continue to be limited for many of the listings. The list includes, Caribbean Flavours, Cargo Handlers, Derrimon Trading, Express Catering, General Accident, ISP Finance and Medical Disposables.
An overall view of stocks indicates that the main market continues to be steered higher by an upward sloping support line as well the 45 and 125 day moving averages, lending support just below, but the 400,000 points resistance could likely stall the rally in the main market for a while. The Junior Market now at an all-time high, is being steared by an upward rising long-term support line and a golden cross. The golden cross is a very strong bullish long-term signal.

4 new additions to IC TOP 10

The bullishness continued on Jamaica Stock Market during the past week with the main market reaching new record level on Thursday and the Junior Market closing at the highest level since November 3, last year.
Several companies released results during the week, some showed strong gains and others were in line with the prior year’s period or slightly below and some were in line with expectations, investors reacted accordingly. The chronic shortage of many of the stocks continue to put upward pressure on prices. Following the release of results some companies profit forecast were adjusted. This resulted in Radio Jamaica and Palace Amusement falling from the TOP 10. Palace forecast for 2019 fiscal year is now placed at $100 per share up from earnings of $96 for 2018 including gain on sale of property. Key Insurance reported another quarter of losses and full year’s earnings were revised downwards putting it outside the top listing. Indies Pharma, the other Junior Market stock to jump ship, rose to $2.36 after listing earlier in the week and is up 57 percent from the IPO price of $1.50.
Paramount Trading fell to $2.10 on low volume to jump into the list and Lasco Distributors fell to $3.85 climbed in as well. Paramount is now in a new fiscal year and is expected to record much improved results over the outturn for the year to May as the company enjoys the benefits of increased revenues and profit from the two new ventures started earlier this year in chlorine, bleach and manufacturing of lubricants. Lasco reported improved results of the year to March with the first quarter to June this year recording improvement over 2017 an indication for increased sales and profit in 2019.
Existing TOP 10 stock, Caribbean Cement continues to undergo wild swings in prices and traded as high as $56 during the past week but closed the week at $47.50, on Friday as supply has virtually dried up, not surprising with the company cutting finance cost and reports of several projects slated to come on stream later this year. Work done by IC Insider.com suggest that the PE ratio is likely to end around 16 or 17 times earnings by year end, as investors continue to gradually upgrade the multiple they are prepared to pay for stocks, which would lift prices sharply over the next several months from current levels. Potential values will change as stock prices fluctuate and will result in movements of the selection in and out of the lists for most weeks.
