Lowest unemployment for Jamaica

Jamaica’s unemployment dropped to the lowest on record at 8.4 percent in July 2018, down from July 2017 when the rate was 11.3 percent. The previous lowest unemployed rate was 8.6 percent reached on October 2007 before the country economy went into contraction.
Importantly, 1,226,400 persons were employed in July this year, an increase of 12,800 above the number recorded in July 2017. Helping with the sharp reduction in the rate of employment, was a simultaneous reduction in the number of persons in the labour force to 1,338,200 persons, a decrease of 2.2 percent compared to July 2017, Statin stated in their release of the data.
The male labour force, of 723,600 persons in July 2018 decreased by 1.5 percent relative to July 2017 while the female labour force decreased by 3 percent to 614,600 persons. The number of males employed increased by 5,900 to 681,800 while female employment increased by 6,900 to 544,600.

Construction saw increased employment.

The number of persons employed in the Construction industry in July 2018 increased by 9,400 persons to 103,700, compared to July 2017. A similar increase was observed in this industry for employed males. Among employed females, Wholesale & Retail, Repair of Motor Vehicle & Equipment industry accounted for the largest increase in employment of 5,200 moving to 129,400 in July 2018.
The number of unemployed persons declined by 27.7 percent to 111,800 persons in July 2018, compared to July 2017. The number of unemployed males decreased by 28.6 percent to 41,800, while unemployed females decreased by 27.2 percent to 70,000. Unemployed youth, aged 14 to 24 years, decreased by 14,600 persons to 45,200 in July 2018.

The number of unemployed persons decreased by 6,300 or 3.5 percent, moving from 179,300 persons in June 2014 to 173,000 in June this year. A total of 1,147,500 persons were employed at the time of the survey, 23,200 more than the 1,124,300 in June 2014. The Labour Force increased by 16,800 or 1.3 percent over the 1,303,700 recorded in June 2014, to 1,320,500 in 2015.In June 2015, the number of persons who were classified as being Outside the Labour Force fell by 12,700 or1.6 percent to 765,400 from 778,100 in June 2014.
Employment_jobsThe Occupation group, Clerks, saw 9,400 more persons or 9.1 percent being employment, raising the numbers employed from 103,000 in June 2014 to 112,400 at the middle of this year. Increases in employment were also observed in Craft and Related Trades Workers with an increase of 3.4 percent from 136,200 persons in June 2014 to 140,900. Employment in the group, Real Estate, Renting & Business Activities increased by 14,400 persons or 22.4 percent while the group Hotels and Restaurants Services increased by 8.8 percent or 7,300 persons.

Little change in employed in March

According to the Statin data, the country’s labour force in March was 1.311 billion persons down from 1.322 billion in Match 2013 as 11,300 persons exited the work force over the one year period, the report stated. At the same time 25,700 persons found work across a wide cross section of the work force. The number of persons classified as outside the Labour Force was 769,900 In March 2014 and an increase of 16,200 over 2013.
Who got jobs?|The Occupation group ‘Elementary Occupations’ increased by 18,200 persons or 12.8 percent, moving from 141,700 in April 2013 to 159,900 in March and the group, ‘Professionals, Senior Officials and Technicians’, increased from 241,900 persons in March 2013 to 251,700 persons (4.1 percent). The group ‘Craft and Related Trades Workers’ had the largest decline for the period, moving from 139,300 in March 2013 to 134,700 in 2014, resulting in a decline of 4,600 (3.3 percent) persons.
The number of persons employed in the ‘Hotels & Restaurants Services’ increased by 9,100 (13.4 percent) persons while the group ‘Transport, Storage and Communication’ increased by 7,300 (10.5 percent) persons.

The unemployment rate for September 2013 was 14.9 percent compared to 14.0 percent in September 2012 but males unemployment rate was well below the national average at 10.6 percent but that for females at 20 percent was way over the average.

Employed up | The Employed Labour Force for September 2013 was 1,110,700 or 6,700 more than the 1,104,000 recorded in September 2012. For males, it increased by 6,400 (1.0 percent) to 637,800 and for females there was no noticeable movement.

The Unemployment rates among youths aged 14-24 years was 37.7 percent in 2013, an increase of 3 percentage points compared with 34.7 percent in September 2012. At the same time, male unemployment rate for youths was 31.4 percent compared to 46.2 percent for females.

The number of persons in the Labour Force was 1,304,800, which was 20,900 (1.6 percent) higher than the 1,283,900 recorded in September 2012. The male labour force increased by 7,900 (1.1 percent) from 705,700 in September 2012 to 713,600 in September 2013, and the female labour force increased by 13,000 (2.2 percent) moving from 578,200 to 591,200 during the same period.

Outside labour force | Persons classified as Outside the Labour Force in September 2013 was 774,300. This represents a decrease of 15,200 (1.9 percent) when compared to 789,500 in September 2012. Over the same period, the number of males Outside the Labour Force declined by 5,100 (1.6 percent) moving from 311,700 to 306,600 and females by 10,100 (2.1 percent) moving from 477,800 to 467,700.

Unemployment jumps to 15.4%

Jamaica’s unemployment rate, which has been on the increase since 2008, jumped to 15.4% for July 2013 compared to 13.1% in July 2012 as more workers came into the workforce. For the same period, the unemployment rate for males was 11.7% compared to 19.9% for females. The Employed Labour Force for July 2013 was 1,108,100, which was 3,100 less than the 1,111,200 recorded in July 2012 but was slightly above the numbers recorded in March this year. For males, it decreased marginally by 600 (0.1%) to 632,100 and for females by 2,500 (0.5%) to 476,000 for the period.

In March this year, the number of employed persons was 1,107,400 compared to 1,098,700 recorded in March 2012 and 1,093,200 in December last year.

The number of unemployed persons in July 2013 was 201,600. This was an increase of 34,200 (20.4%) when compared with 167,400 in July 2012. The number of unemployed males increased by 13,900 (19.9%) and the number of females by 20,300 (20.8%) for the same period.

The July 2013 Labour Force Survey, was conducted by the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) and covered the week of June 23-29.

Labour Force | In July 2013, the number of persons in the Labour Force was 1,309,700, which was 31,200 (2.4%) higher than the 1,278,500 recorded in July 2012. The male labour force increased by 13,400 (1.9%) from 702,300 in July 2012 to 715,700 in July 2013, and the female labour force increased by 17,800 (3.1%) moving from 576,200 to 594,000 in the same period.

The Employment Rate for July 2013 was 84.6%, which was a 2.3 percentage point decline from the 86.9% in July 2012. The Employment Rate declined for both males and females over the period. For males, it declined by 1.8 percentage points, moving from 90.1% to 88.3%, and for females it declined by 2.9 percentage points, from 83% to 80.1% over the same period.

Outsiders | The number of persons who were classified as Outside the Labour Force in July 2013 was 768,000. This represents a decrease of 25,500 (3.2%) when compared to 793,500 in July 2012. In the same period, the number of males Outside the Labour Force declined by 10,400 (3.3%) moving from 314,400 to 304,000 and the females by 15,100 (3.2%) moving from 479,100 to 464,000 over the period.

Where they work | The Occupation group ‘Clerks’ had an  increase in employment of 5,600 (5.8%) persons, moving from 96,300 in July 2012 to 101,900 in July 2013. The group ‘Craft and Related Trade Workers’ had the largest decline for the period, moving from 149,600 to 141,800 in July 2013 resulting in a decline of 7,800 (5.2%) persons.

The largest increase in employment occurred in the industry group ‘Real Estate, Renting and Business Activities’ where the number of persons employed increased by 11,300 (19.3%). Similar increases were experienced in the group ‘Health and Social Work’ where it increased by 4,300 (14.3%) persons. During the same period, the industry group ‘Manufacturing’ declined by 8,700 (11.3%) persons followed by ‘Wholesale & Retail, Repair of Motor Vehicle & Equipment’ which declined by 5,200 (2.4%) persons.

Unemployment rates among youths aged 14-24 years was 38.3% for July 2013. This was an increase of 6.6 percentage points when compared with 31.7% in July 2012. The male unemployment rate for youths was 29.5% compared to 50.3% for females.

Employment rate stabilised in 2012

Data from the Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) showed that the employment remained fairly stable in 2012 compared with 2011. The labour survey done by the government body that collects economic and social data (STATIN) between December 16 to 22 last year showed that there were 1,093,200 persons employed in December last year and 181,600 unemployed, which represented an increase of 4,400 (2.5%) over the 177,200 in December 2011 with the unemployment rate of 14.2 percent a slight increase over the level of 14.1 percent in December 2011.

In December 2012, the unemployment rate was, 10.3 per cent for males and 18.9 per cent for females. In September 2012, 172,900 persons were unemployed. The December data showed that of those employed 619,300 were males and 473,900 females. This showed no significant change compared with 1,083,400 (0.9%) in December 2011. In September 2012, employment was 1,088,200.

Total labour force was 1,274,800 persons in December 2012, comprising 690,300 males and 584,500 females, an increase of 14,200 (1.1%) from 1,260,600 in December 2011. In the previous quarter, September 2012, there were 1,261,100 persons in the labour force.

The unemployment rate among youths (14-24 years) was 37.0 per cent in December 2012. This represented an increase of 3.3 percentage points when compared with 33.7 per cent in December 2011. In September 2012, the rate was 35.3 per cent.

The number of persons outside the labour force decreased by 11,600 (1.5%) between December 2011 (748,800) and December 2012 (737,200).
