Tax measures bite stock market

New tax measures announced on Thursday, hit the stock market on Friday, particularly, Carreras that had a direct hit with increased taxes on cigarettes.
JSE 13-3-15The price of Carreras stock fell to close at $40 after shedding $3, but it traded as low as $38.01 before recovering partially.
National Commercial Bank lost 50 cents and Scotia Investments fell by $2. At the end of trading 9 stocks recorded gains and 11 suffered losses. Trading activity picked up from the low levels of Thursday as 27 securities traded worth $41,075,686 versus only 15 securities on Thursday. The JSE Market Index lost 637.18 points to 81,881.33, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index fell 712.40 points to close at 90,265.43.

Pan Jamaican Investment finished trading in 16,200 shares while gaining 80 cents to $54 and Scotia Investments saw 1,423,517 units changing hands to close 50 cents higher to $24.
Firm| The stocks in the main market to close without a change in the last traded prices are, Jamaica Money Market Brokers trading only 170 ordinary shares at $7.10. Kingston Wharves had dealing in 996 shares to close at $6.40, Sagicor Group contributed 545,371 shares to close at $10.42 and Scotia Group ending trading with 46,432 shares at $20.80.
JSE sum 12-3-15 Declines| The last traded prices of stocks with losses at the end of trading in the main market are, Carreras finishing with 41,634 units, to close lower by 15 cents at $43. Mayberry Investments closing with 1,020 units, the price slipped 14 cents to $2.36 and National Commercial Bank (NCB) finishing with only 3,425 shares trading lower by $1 at $24. NCB traded at the equivalent of J$25 on the Trinidad and Tobago Market with a bid on to buy 95,326 units at the closing price, there were no stocks on offer.
Preference| Jamaica Money Market Brokers 8.75% preference share traded 37,618 units at $3.

The Jamaican dollar had another day of moderate appreciation on Thursday, against the major currencies it normally trades against. Purchases of all currencies by dealers ended at US$32,018,857 equivalent, compared with US$32,011,020, on Wednesday and selling of the equivalent of US$55,570,947 versus US$35,962,081 on the previous trading day.
FX sum 12-3-15 In US dollar trading, dealers bought US$27,951,764 compared to US$30,387,092 on Wednesday. The buying rate for the US dollar fell 6 cents to $114.92 and US$54,257,038 was sold versus US$34,263,115 on Wednesday, the selling rate slipped 1 cent to end at $115.47. The Canadian dollar buying rate rose 78 cents to $89.64 with dealers buying C$1,191,447 and selling C$603,938, at an average rate that dropped 29 cents to $91.13 The rate for buying the British Pound regained $2.49 to $173.40 for the purchase of £1,934,986, while £484,605 was sold, at an average rate of $172.66, for a fall of 84 cents. At the end of trading it took J$122.12 to purchase the Euro, $1.56 less than on Wednesday , according to data from Bank of Jamaica, while dealers purchased the European common currency at J$119.78 for a decline of $1.47 from Wednesday. Other currencies bought, amounted to the equivalent of US$218,135 while the equivalent of US$112,645, was sold.

The highest selling rate slipped 50 cents to $93.50 and the lowest selling rate declined by 35 cents to $86.65 The highest buying rate for the British Pound, climbed $1.98 to $176.03. The lowest buying rate dropped 88 cents to $138.73, the highest selling rate dipped 15 cents to $178.85 and the lowest selling rate fell $1.15 to $167.15.

Activity on the Junior Market closed with only 2 securities traded, ending with 5,209,400 units changing hands valued at $5,996,887. The JSE Junior Market Index declined 3.18 points to close at 716.65, with the price of 1 stocks advancing and none declining.

First Citizens Bank trading 2,164 shares, closing with a loss of 46 cents at $35, Grace Kennedy trading 1,686 shares at $3.59 after losing 1 cent and Scotiabank losing 4 cents in trading 2,342 shares to end at $62.16.

The Jamaican dollar continues to made gains against the major currencies on Wednesday as purchases of all currencies by dealers ended at US$32,011,020 equivalent, compared with US$32,466,669, on Tuesday and selling of the equivalent of US$35,962,081 versus US$53,440,863 on the previous trading day.
FX sum 11-3-15 In US dollar trading, dealers bought US$30,387,092 compared to US$27,214,911 on Tuesday. The buying rate for the US dollar rose 2 cents to $114.98 and US$34,263,115 was sold versus US$50,104,155 on Tuesday, the selling rate fell 3 cents to end at $115.48 The Canadian dollar buying rate dropped 74 cents to $88.86 with dealers buying C$614,839 and selling C$537,751, at an average rate that advanced 36 cents to $91.42. The rate for buying the British Pound dipped $1.75 to $170.91 for the purchase of £694,383, while £517,462 was sold, at an average rate of $173.51, for a decline of 29 cents. At the end of trading it took J$123.68 to purchase the Euro, $1.62 less than on Tuesday , according to data from Bank of Jamaica, while dealers purchased the European common currency at J$121.24 for a decline of $1.64 from Tuesday . Other currencies bought, amounted to the equivalent of US$116,629 while the equivalent of US$495,771, was sold.
