JSE at 7 months high with year-end rally

The JSE all Jamaica Index continues to move away from the resistance level at the yellow line as the market keeps on moving up from its 2014 low.

The Jamaica Stock Exchange enjoyed a good day of trading in continuation of the late year rally which started at the beginning of November, resulting in the prices of 11 stocks rising and just 4 declining as 23 securities changed hands, ending in 4,084,357 units trading, valued at $37,020,086, in all market segments.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator had 4 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and 2 stocks with offers that were lower.
Main Market| The JSE Market Index gained 694.35 points to 76,449.94, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index rose 776.31 points to close at 84,192.88 and is at its highest level since April 28, this year when it closed at 84,734.87 points and the JSE combined index gained 705.54 points to close at 78,320.27.
Gains| Stocks gaining with last traded prices, at the end of trading in the main market are, Cable & Wireless ending with 294,400 shares changing hands to close 4 cents higher, at 50 cents. Carreras completed trading with 13,964 shares changing hands to close with a 20 cents increase to $37, Grace Kennedy ended with 10,402 units and put on 1 cent to close at $62. Jamaica Money Market Brokers ended trading with 8,531 shares changing hands to close at 55 cents $7.10, Jamaica Producers ended with 12,898 shares with the price rising 1 cent to $17.51, National Commercial Bank had 1,337,635 shares changing hands to close with a gain of 49 cents to $18.50. Sagicor Group finished trading with 12,500 units changing hands to close 20 cents higher at $10.20, Sagicor Real Estate Fund concluded trading with 10,000 shares to gain 28 cents at $7.28, for a new 52 weeks’ high, Scotia Group ended with 8,300 shares changing hands to close 10 cents higher at $20.10 and its subsidiary Scotia Investments traded 20,040 shares with the price rising 40 cents to $23.40.

Firm| The stocks in the main market to close without a change in the last traded prices are, Caribbean Cement finished with 7,310 units trading at $2.40. Proven Investments ended trading with 3,320 shares at 19 US cents, Salada Foods closed with 5,000 shares trading at $8 and Supreme Ventures finished with 30,000 shares changing hands to close at $1.92.

Kingston Properties up 88% in December

The year-end rally, continued on the Jamaica Stock Exchange on Thursday, as Kingston Properties hits a new high having gained 87.5 percent for the December. Trading in the overall market resulted in the prices of 10 stocks rising and only 3 declining as 25 securities changed hands, ending in 3,028,876 units trading, valued at $10,239,236, in all market segments.
IC bid-offer Indicator| At the end of trading, in the main and junior markets, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator showed 10 stocks with bids higher than their last selling prices and only 1 stock with the offer lower a clear sign of rising prices ahead.
Main Market| The JSE Market Index gained 196.62 points to 75,757.06, the JSE All Jamaican Composite index rose 219.83 points to close at 83,418.22 and the JSE combined index climbed 261.34 points to close at 77,656.27.

Hardware & Lumber traded 3,000 shares with the price rising 49 cents to $8. Kingston Properties closed at a new all-time high of$7.50, with a 60 cents rise with 403,000 units trading. National Commercial Bank finished with only 100 shares changing hands to close 1 cent up to $18.51, Salada Foods concluded trading with 268,045 shares, 19 cents higher at $8 and Seprod ended trading with 8,600 shares changing hands to close with a 25 cents gain at $12.50.

The Jamaica Stock Exchange, closed October with the prices of 5 stocks rising and 5 declining as 21 securities changed hands, ending in 1,856,647 units trading, valued at only $6,072,425, in all market segments. The market closed out the month slightly lower than it started at, measured by the market indices, but technical indicators as well as fundamentals, point to a better out turn for November.

With Friday being the close of the month, the stronger closing bids are likely engineered by fund managers’ interest in boosting the value of stocks in their portfolios to boost the end of month performance and is worth watching in the coming days.
Main Market| The JSE Market Index lost 98.56 points to 71,706.29 and is down from the 72,238.36 points, September closed at. The JSE All Jamaican Composite index fell 110.21 points to close at 78,888.89 down on the close of September at 79,483.81 and the JSE combined index declined by 95.70 points to close at 73,559.56 compared to 74,034.71 at the end of September.

Sales up margin down at Lasco Distributors

Sales climb 17 percent for the September quarter, at Lasco Distributors to hit $2.7 billion and 10 percent in the six months to September, to reach $5.1 billion. Gross profit margin declined, leading to a growth of just 3.8 percent in gross profit, to $475 million from $457 million, for the quarter, and declined 2.2 percent to $910 million for the half year.
Operating cost jumped 15 percent in the quarter, to $377 million and just over 17 percent for the six months to $738 million, pushing profit down 19 percent to $112.5 million for the quarter, from $138.7 million in 2013 and down a much larger, 33 percent, to $203 million for the half year, versus $303 million in the 2013 period.
As disappointing as the second quarter numbers are, they represent a major improvement over the first quarter with a revenue increase of 4 percent, and a fall in profits of 45 percent compared to the 2013 June quarter.
Finances|The company has quite a bit of funds tied up in inventories $1.3 billion and receivables $1.7 billion, that are in excess of normal trading levels, cash funds on the other hand is up to $850 million and will be handy in helping to finance the 110,000 square foot warehousing facility, that they will be embarking on shortly, to meet what management says, is increasing demand flowing from new products to be distributed by the company.
The expected payment from their successful law suit against Pfizer is not yet booked and the amount not yet made public but should exceed $1 billion.

Lasco Distributors markets a wide range of household, foods and pharmaceutical products and is listed on the junior market of the Jamaica Stock Exchange. the company recently started the distribution of I Cool barnds of drinks its sister company Lasco Manufacturing commenced manufacturing recently, as well as Salada Foods products which it commenced distributing, at the start of the year.
