Majors jump to new high – Friday

Stocks hit new highs in trading on the Jamaica Stock Exchange at the close on Friday with the all Jamaica Composite Index leaping 1,691.30 points to close at 186,844.07, for an 11.6 percent rise for the year to date. Market ended with 38 securities trading, the prices of 12 gained while 14 declined in the overall market, including just 1 stock rising and 7 falling, in the junior market.
At the close, the JSE Market Index jumped 1,512.33 points to a record close of 168,113.61 and the JSE combined index surged 1,476.85 points, to end at 181,079.45.
The market is surging to new highs on limited volumes, not an unusual development in the early phase of a bull market as selling is reduced and buyers try to get stocks close to recent traded prices. At the close 2,319,114 units valued at $26,904,029 changed hands, compared to 6,736,290 units valued at $38,657,160 changing hands on Thursday. The junior market accounted for 952,581 units valued at $6,200,775 of the stocks traded.

In market activity, Barita Investments traded just 1,600 shares and fell 44 cents to close at $4.15, Cable & Wireless dropped 5 cents to close at 91 cents with 122,819 units trading, Caribbean Cement rose 40 cents in trading 1,500 shares to close at $31.10. Carreras gained 97 cents with 1,014 shares changing hands at $66, trading in 1834 Investments ended with a loss of 1 cent with 4,248 shares changing hands to close at $1.23, Grace Kennedy closed with 20,781 shares changing hands at $42, Jamaica Producers ended with 4,240 shares changing hands to close at $8.40. Jamaica Stock Exchange rose $1.49 and ended at $28.49 while trading 7,320 shares, JMMB Group lost 4 cents in trading 63,110 units to close at $14.51, Kingston Wharves rose 45 cents in trading 1,070 shares to close at $17.50. Mayberry Investments traded 3,360 shares to close with a gain of 10 cents at $3.60, National Commercial Bank traded 15,699 shares and rose 65 cents to end at $42.25, trading in 138 Student Living ended with shares trading with a gain of 20 cents at $4.70, Pan Jamaican Investments lost 10 cents to close at $23.40 after trading 17,780 shares. Radio Jamaica rose 5 cents in trading 10,000 shares to close at $1.70, Sagicor Group traded 115,109 shares to end at $23.85, Sagicor Real Estate Fund traded 19,374 shares to close at $10.18 with a rise of 6 cents, Scotia Group jumped $2.18 to close at $32.19 with 737,828 shares changing hands. Scotia Investments had 1,992 units changing hands to close at $27, with a fall of $3, Seprod traded 100,00 shares to close with a gain of 60 cents at a 52 weeks’ high of $22.60, Sterling Investments closed at a 52 weeks’ high of $15 with 9,889 shares trading, JMMB Group 7.50% preference share traded 53,00 units to end at $1.10.
