Flows into the Jamaican foreign exchange market on Tuesday fell from Monday’s levels with dealers buying almost $12 million less than they sold but with the value of the local currency holding steady versus the US dollar.
Dealers bought the equivalent of US$48,162,961 and sold US$59,905,869, compared with US$66,694,884 and US$53,329,088 respectively on Monday.
Sale of US dollars , exceeded the amount purchased by dealers by US$13.5 million with dealers buying US$42,736,857 compared to US$62,348,278 on Monday. The buying rate for the US dollar rose 11 cents to $119.84. A total of US$56,287,373 was sold versus US$50,843,441 on Monday as the selling rate held steady at $120.34. The Canadian dollar buying rate fell by 11 cents to end at $83.56 with dealers buying C$2,172,288 and selling C$3,269,804, at an average rate that climbed 94 cents to $86.48. The rate for buying the British Pound gained $1.23 to $176.81 for the purchase of £2,521,352, while £618,435 was sold, with the rate falling 26 cents to $177.28. At the end of trading, it took J$131.38 to purchase the Euro, for a rise of 85 cents on Monday’s rate, according to data from Bank of Jamaica, while dealers purchased the European common currency at J$128.75 for a gain of 69 cents over Monday’s rate. The US dollar equivalent of other currencies traded, amounts to US$191,151 being bought, while US$357,564 was sold.
Highs & Lows| The highest buying rate for the US dollar, fell $1.40 to $120.60, the lowest buying and the highest selling rates were unchanged at $98.86 and $126.69,respectively and lowest selling rate jumped $18.22 to $117. The highest buying rate for the Canadian dollar rose 5 cents to $86.60, the lowest buying rate gained 42 cents to $69.14, the highest and lowest selling rates remained at $90 and $82, respectively. The highest buying rate for the British Pound, fell 6 cents to end at $178.94. The lowest buying rate increased 25 cents to end at $144.01, while the highest selling rate rose 33 cents to end at $185.65 and the lowest selling rate inched up by 10 cents to $172.10.
