Trading jumps on JSE Main Market


Trading activity picked up on the Jamaica Stock Exchange Main Market on Tuesday, with a 42 percent rise in the volume traded and a 56 percent jump in value, compared to Monday. Trading activity was helped by a million shares trade in Massy Holdings for $71.5 million, which contributed 53 percent to the market value. Trading ended with 61 securities changing hands on Tuesday and on Monday, with prices of 26 rising, 17 declining and 18 ending unchanged.

As trading climbed on Tuesday, the market closed with the trading of 10,290,895 shares with a value of $135,163,331 after increasing from 7,225,849 stocks at $86,689,047 on Monday. Trading ended with an average of 168,703 shares worth $2,215,792, up from 118,457 stock units at $1,421,132 on Monday, but lower than the month to date average of 216,726 units with a value of  $3,046,072 and 219,862 shares at $3,100,298 on Monday and in May with an average of 328,145 stock units at $2,328,972. Sagicor Select Financial Fund led trading with 2.74 million shares for 26.6 percent of total volume followed by Transjamaican Highway with 2.50 million stocks for 24.3 percent of the day’s trade, Wigton Energy closed with 1.52 million stock units for 14.7 percent of the volume traded and Massy Holdings with 1.0 million shares for 9.7 percent of market share. The All Jamaican Composite Index gained 2,571.51 points to wrap up trading at 418,776.33, the JSE Main Index rose 1,396.20 points to settle at 352,696.97 and the JSE Financial Index gained 0.58 points to finish at 66.81. At the close, the Investor’s Choice bid-offer indicator shows 14 stocks ending with bids higher than their last selling prices and one with a lower offer.
The Main Market ended trading with an average PE Ratio of 15. At the close of trading, AS Bryden rose 99 cents to $24 after an exchange of 40 shares, Berger Paints shed 51 cents to end at $5.09 following trading of 7,624 stock units, Eppley Caribbean Property Fund lost 55 cents to finish at $43.75 after an exchange of 809 shares. General Accident advanced 59 cents and ended at $7.60 with 7,676 stock units changing hands, Guardian Holdings popped $7 to end at $332, with an exchange of 1,357 units, Kingston Wharves rallied 50 cents to close at $35.50 with investors trading 8,243 stocks. Massy Holdings slipped $2.37 to $71.50 with an exchange of 1,000,368 units, NCB Financial fell 45 cents to $58.50 with 30,075 shares crossing the market, Pan Jamaica increased $1.95 to $47 as investors exchanged 2,940 stock units. Proven Investments climbed $1 and ended at $11.50 with 215 shares clearing the market, Seprod gained $3.01 to end trading at $79.99 after investors traded 34,346 stocks, Stanley Motta skidded 47 cents to close at $5.63 following trading of 10,000 stock units and Wisynco Group dipped 55 cents to $20.41 with 32,994 units crossing the market.
In the preference segment, Productive Business Solutions 10.5% dropped $70 to end at $1,130, trading 200 shares and Sygnus Credit Investments C10.5% popped $12.99 in closing at $105.99, with a mere one stock passing through the market.
